My life as a medical intern, day one.
June 4, 2009
Even though I’m looking towards journalism/advertising, my parents are determined to change my mind by setting me up as an intern at SLU. So I’m now working in the Neurology Research Dept under Dr. Teng (yay…)
What exactly does a neurology intern do?
Wellllllll. Day one consisted of attempting to AChR Epsilon and SMHC in an EOM -extra ocular muscle- whole muscle (what does that mean??? hmm, your guess is good as mine). Basically what I had to do was take my samples of muscle tissue and add an antibody while cleaning it with PBS (Phosphate Buffered Saline) at different intervals. It was easy enough to understand, I guess, but I still do not understand WHY I’m doing it… I guess that’s for day two? We’ll see.
Dr. Teng also hinted that I would be trying micro-surgery tomorrow… yikes! Being extremely queasy around blood and guts, I’m not too sure how well that’s going to go! Haha, but it’ll definitely be interesting to talk about.
Well that’s about it ;] I’ll keep you guys posted!
XO, Becca.
